A Melting Snowman Science Experiment
One of the nicest things about this winter themed science activity is that it works anywhere, no snow required at all. It is easy, accessible, and made entirely from simple ingredients you probably already have at home.
This activity is very simple and quick to set up. Using baking soda and water, children can create their own “snow” figures in any shape they choose. Snowmen are especially fun, but creativity is welcome.
Although the figures do not truly melt, adding vinegar creates an exciting chemical reaction. As the vinegar touches the baking soda, bubbles begin to form and the shapes slowly break apart, giving the illusion of melting while the baking soda is being fully used up.
Materials needed
1 cup os baking soda
1 tablespoon salt
2 tablespoons dish soap
2 tablespoons water
Preparation
Mix all the ingredients together and shape the mixture into three balls to form the snowman’s body. Place the balls on top of each other, from largest to smallest. Decorate the snowman with black bean eyes and an orange paper nose. You can also add arms using small sticks.
The magic
Once the snowman is ready, slowly pour vinegar over him and observe. Watch as bubbles appear, the mixture fizzes, and the snowmen begin to change shape in a lively and engaging way.
This playful experiment combines creativity and science, making it a perfect hands-on activity for young learners.
